Inspiring the Next Generation on Community Energy
Creating information materials to engage young people on climate action and community energy.
Westmill Sustainable Energy Trust (WeSET) received a grant of £1,500 from Low Carbon Hub’s Community Grant Fund to help engage young people in renewable energy and climate action.
The challenge
With increasing events and school visits, the WeSET education officer needed engaging, sustainably-created educational materials to introduce young people to renewable and community energy.
At events they wanted to create education-specific set of resources that would appeal to school and college age children.
The goal
To equip young people with engaging, sustainable educational tools on community energy and climate action.
What happened?
- WeSET developed and produced a series of information materials including banners, information boards and leaflets.
- Created accompanying activity booklets.
- Produced a series of ‘bite-sized’ video clips on renewable and community energy aimed at different key stages.
- Used an eco printer to ensure print materials were as sustainable as possible.

Impact
- The education officer can now connect with students, teachers and parents more effectively.
- Increased ability to share links to educational resources.
- More visitors are engaging with the Westmills Wind and Solar Farms.
We were very excited to receive grant funding from Low Carbon Hub which has enabled us to design and produce materials and printed resources to extend and promote our educational outreach. The grant also meant that we could finally design and produce professional, sustainably printed activity books and offer them to schools and home schoolers for free to complement our online education pack, something that teachers had been asking for about for some time.

What’s next?
WeSET will continue to use these materials to engage young people, students and their teachers on community energy, renewables and climate action. They hope they will help to increase understanding of renewable energy, in particular the need for diversity, local community energy projects and a genuine engagement with the climate crisis.
